Prosurf Extreme Charity Kitesurf Event 2009 February 8^th – 14th 2010

Firmly fixed on the Kenya sporting calendar, the Prosurf Extreme Charity Kitesurf Event 2010 came around again this February at the Nyali International Beach Hotel, with wind that just arrived in time and with entrants from Kenya, Germany and Italy.

This year’s event week was different in that it was an Amateur event with a great turnout of entrants from Kenya’s growing kitesurfing community. Held over 3 days, there was a race event, a kicker and slider event with ramps in the water to jump, as well as a big air and freestyle session. Fire jumping, now a firm favourite at this annual event, saw kitesurfers racing in towards the beach and jumping over a burning raft at the last minute pulling off tricks mid-air. It was an hour of spectacular and well coordinated kiting that kept all the spectators on the beach spell bound. The fire jumping event this year ended with an evening BBQ at the Nyali beachside Aqua Bar.

The event week was documented by internationally acclaimed extreme sports photographer Christian Black. In addition to the event he photographed one of the Charity projects of M.E.A.K in the Taita province. This was a 5 day eye clinic for people blinded by cataracts; This clinic provided complex eye surgery on location to over 120 people returning their sight immediately.

The third and final day saw an exhibition of “old skool” moves from Professional Kiter Gabi Steindl and from North Kiteboarding, and with more “new skool” wakestyle moves from Chris Burke sponsored by Liquid Force.

At the end of the event week was the Prize Giving Party on the Tamarind Mombasa’s traditional Arab trading boat Dhow converted into a bar and dance floor. The event raised 140,000 Kes for both M.E.A.K. and I.C.R.H. in Kenya.
